Learning From the Experts: How Insurance Knowledge Helps My Clients

This week, I attended a class taught by a local insurance agent who has been serving Charleston families for 19 years. The class wasn’t about turning me into an insurance expert—that’s not my role—but about giving me awareness of the pitfalls that can derail a sale and, more importantly, the tools to solve those problems before they ever reach the closing table.

What I took away was eye-opening. We talked about how endorsements and riders can dramatically change what a policy covers—and how that can explain the difference between two quotes that look similar at first glance. I also learned that some insurance companies just send out quick quotes, while others dig deeper, asking the right questions to customize a policy. That extra step can save homeowners money or make sure they’re properly covered when the unexpected happens.

For me as an agent, this kind of knowledge matters. It means I’m better prepared when an issue like an aged roof or old plumbing pops up on a home inspection. Those things can cause real headaches for buyers if their insurance premium jumps or a company refuses to write a policy at all.

Knowing ahead of time where the obstacles might be helps me guide my sellers in addressing them up front—and helps me guide my buyers in finding solutions when roadblocks appear.

I don’t give insurance advice, but I do make it a point to learn from experts so that I can spot trouble early and bring in the right professionals to help. Having an experienced insurance agent on my team is a benefit to my clients, and one of the things that sets me apart from other agents in the Charleston market.

At the end of the day, it’s about always building my skillset to serve my clients better. Real estate is never just about four walls and a roof—it’s about making sure the details behind the scenes don’t stand in the way of your move.
