What? Snow in Charleston?! A Rare and Magical Start to 2025
Charleston, SC, experienced a rare and enchanting event this week: snowfall! On January 21-22, 2025, ice and snow blanketed the city, transforming our iconic cobblestone streets, historic homes, and moss-draped oaks into a picturesque winter scene straight out of a storybook. While snow is a novelty here, it serves as a reminder of just how unique Charleston’s climate truly is.
How Rare Is Snow in Charleston?
Charleston’s average winter temperatures hover in the mild 40s to 60s Fahrenheit range, making snow a true rarity. In fact, measurable snowfall occurs roughly once every 5-10 years—and even then, it’s usually just a dusting. The last significant snowfall in Charleston was back in January 2018, when a rare winter storm brought over 5 inches of snow to the Lowcountry. Events like this week’s light snow are fleeting, adding a touch of wonder to our otherwise temperate winters.
Why Charleston’s Climate is a Draw for New Residents
For those used to enduring long, harsh winters filled with ice, snow, and sub-zero temperatures, Charleston offers a refreshing alternative. Our mild winters mean more time spent enjoying the outdoors, from strolls along Folly Beach to dining al fresco on King Street. Snowbirds, retirees, and families alike are drawn to Charleston’s year-round livability, where winter coats are often swapped for light jackets and patio heaters.
